Unveiling the Art of Barrel Precision with Bartlein Barrel - SS, 6.5mm, B#9 Heavy Varmint, 8 Twist, 29'' Blank, 5R
When it comes to the world of precision shooting, the choice of your barrel can significantly impact your performance. The Bartlein Barrel - SS, 6.5mm, B#9 Heavy Varmint, 8 Twist, 29'' Blank, 5R represents the pinnacle of barrel craftsmanship, designed to elevate your shooting experience to new heights. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the nuances of barrel contours, rifling, and more, unlocking the secrets behind Bartlein's exceptional reputation.
The Influence of Barrel Contours
Do contours affect the barrel weight? Absolutely, they do. The choice of barrel contour plays a crucial role in determining the overall weight of your firearm.
Do heavier contours shoot better than lighter contours? The weight of your barrel can impact shooting performance, especially when dealing with heat-induced barrel movement. Heavier contours tend to resist wandering and maintain stability as the barrel heats up.
At Bartlein Barrels, we exclusively utilize single-point cut rifling, a process that eliminates stress in the barrel blank. This means that, unlike button-made barrels, the contour choice is not as critical for our barrels.
The Impact of Barrel Contours on Shooting
Does contour affect how a barrel shoots? In essence, yes. A heavier barrel can enhance shooting performance by aiding recoil management and reducing shooter fatigue. The added weight allows for extended shooting sessions with greater comfort.
However, it's worth noting that lighter weight contours can also perform exceptionally well. At Bartlein Barrels, we've witnessed lighter contours rivaling heavier ones, challenging the notion that weight is the sole determinant of shooting prowess.
Suppressors and Barrel Contours
Should suppressors be put on any barrel contour? No, suppressors typically perform better on heavier barrels. The addition of a suppressor affects the harmonic vibrations of the barrel due to the added weight. For optimal results, we recommend using suppressors on barrels no smaller than a medium palma contour.
Advantages of Single-Point Cut Rifling
Why is single-point cut rifling better than button rifling? Single-point cut rifling minimizes stress on the barrel blank, unlike button rifling. Button rifling, especially with lighter contours, can negatively impact bore dimensions, opening them up over time. This is not an issue with single-point cut rifling, ensuring consistent accuracy and preventing bore issues.
Furthermore, threading the muzzle for accessories like muzzle brakes or suppressors can lead to bore opening problems in button-rifled barrels, particularly at the muzzle's crown edge. Such issues can adversely affect accuracy, making single-point cut rifling a superior choice.
The Significance of Fluting
Why is fluting a barrel important? Fluting offers multiple advantages:
- Weight Reduction: Fluting reduces the overall weight of the barrel without altering the contour, enhancing the firearm's maneuverability.
- Barrel Cooling: The increased surface area created by fluting improves heat dissipation, ensuring consistent performance during extended shooting sessions.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Fluting adds a unique visual dimension to the barrel, a feature appreciated by many shooters for its distinctive look.
Do we have a minimum depth for fluting? Fluting can be taken to extremes, potentially causing harmonic and vibration issues that may affect accuracy. If you're unable to add fluting to your chosen barrel, it's an indication that the contour is too shallow for fluting.
Does fluting make the barrel stiffer? Measuring stiffness can be subjective. In general, a fluted barrel is less stiff compared to an identical unfluted contour. The impact on your shooting performance may vary depending on your specific requirements.
The Role of Rifling in Barrel Performance
What style of rifling should I get? We offer three rifling options: 4-groove, 5R, and Conventional-5. The number of grooves doesn't significantly impact accuracy or barrel life, a fact supported by feedback from ammunition and bullet manufacturers using our test barrels.
5R rifling offers additional benefits, including reduced bullet deformation and improved flight characteristics. It aids in fighting bullet failure, providing enhanced accuracy and performance. Our commitment to excellence in rifling led to positive feedback from ammunition and bullet makers.
While 5R rifling offers numerous advantages, there are exceptions, such as short jacket 6mm bullets often used by short-range bench shooters. These bullets may not perform optimally with 5R rifling due to the short bearing surface and the unique characteristics of "R" style rifling.

Dependable barrels.
Never had a problem with these barrels. Super accurate, consistent and dependable. The 5R rifling is easier on cleanup, I think anyway.

Bartlein Barrel Blank
Shipping was very quick and product was received in good condition. It was well packaged to prevent any damage in a much larger box than I expected. Probably could fit 4 barrel blanks in the box if they were each in the skinny boxes that I've seen from other mfg. The blank it's self was exactly what I had ordered and appears to be perfectly made.
