Brand Story

Bartlein Barrels produces single-point cut-rifled barrels, a process known for excellent consistency and bore uniformity. Each groove is cut individually, allowing precise control over twist rate and geometry.

The majority of Bartlein barrels are made from 416R stainless steel, which accounts for most of their production. They also offer 4140 chrome moly and Mod400, a proprietary alloy designed to extend barrel life in higher round-count applications.

Bartlein offers multiple rifling styles, including 4-groove, conventional 5-groove, and 5R. Their 5R rifling uses an odd number of lands with angled sides, which helps reduce bullet deformation and can make cleaning easier compared to traditional square-shouldered rifling.

Product Lines at a Glance

Bartlein produces barrel blanks across a wide range of contours and configurations commonly used in precision rifle builds.

  • Stainless Steel Blanks (416R): the standard choice for PRS, benchrest, F-Class, and precision hunting rifles. Known for consistency, machinability, and corrosion resistance.
  • Carbon Fiber Wrapped Barrels: available through select builds and partners, carbon-wrapped options reduce overall weight compared to equivalent steel contours while maintaining stiffness. Popular for hunting and field rifles.

  • Contours, Calibers, and Availability

    Common Bartlein contours include:

    • B#4 Bull Sporter
    • B#6 Heavy Target
    • B#7 MTU
    • B#8 Light Varmint
    • B#9 Heavy Varmint
    • B#13 Remington Varmint
    • B#14 M24
    • B#23 Marksman

Bartlein produces barrels across a wide range of calibers, with strong demand in 6mm, 6.5mm, and .30 caliber cartridges used in precision shooting disciplines.

Which Bartlein Is Right for You?

    • PRS / Tactical: heavier contours like MTU (#7) or M24 (#14) are commonly used for their stability and heat management. Popular chamberings include 6mm Creedmoor, 6 Dasher, 6 GT, and 6.5 Creedmoor.
    • Short-Range Benchrest: Light Varmint (#8) and Heavy Varmint (#9) contours are commonly paired with cartridges like 6 PPC and sometimes 6 BR, with twist rates selected based on bullet weight.
    • F-Class / Long-Range Target: Heavy Palma and Heavy Target contours in 6mm but more commonly .284-class cartridges are chosen for velocity and consistency at extended distances. In F-TR competition, rifles are restricted to .223 Remington or .308 Winchester, unlike F-Open where a wider range of cartridges is permitted.
    • Long-Range Hunting: carbon-wrapped Remington Varmint (#13) or M24 (#14) profiles help reduce carry weight while maintaining rigidity.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What twist rate should I run for 6.5 Creedmoor?

A 1:8 twist is the most common choice and stabilizes the majority of 140 to 150 grain match bullets. Faster twists, like 1:7.5, can provide additional stability margin for longer, heavier projectiles.

    What is 5R rifling?

5R rifling uses five lands with angled sides rather than square edges. The odd number of lands avoids direct opposition across the bore, which helps reduce bullet deformation and may contribute to easier cleaning.

Blank vs. prefit, what's the difference?

A blank is unchambered and unthreaded, and requires a gunsmith to finish. A prefit is pre-chambered and threaded for a specific action and installs with proper tools and gauges. Prefits reduce time and cost. Blanks allow full customization.

How long will a Bartlein barrel last?

Barrel life depends heavily on cartridge and usage. As a general guideline, 6mm high-performance cartridges run roughly 1,800 to 2,500 rounds, and 6.5 Creedmoor stretches to roughly 2,500 to 4,000. Higher velocity and pressure accelerate throat erosion.

Do I need to break in a Bartlein barrel?

Bartlein recommends a short break-in process involving initial single shots with cleaning, followed by short groups. The goal is to smooth the throat and confirm consistent fouling and cleaning behavior.

    Stainless or carbon-wrapped?

416R stainless is the standard for most competition rifles. Carbon-wrapped reduces weight and is often chosen for hunting or field rifles where mobility matters.
