How to Choose a Custom Rifle Action

Four decisions narrow the catalog from hundreds of SKUs to a handful. Get these right and the rest of the build falls into place.

Short action or long action. Short actions fit cartridges up to the .308 Winchester case length, roughly 2.8" overall. That covers 6mm BR, 6 Dasher, 6 GT, 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 Rem and .308 Win. Long actions handle longer cases like 6.5 PRC, .300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua. Pick the shortest action that fits your cartridge, since shorter means stiffer, lighter and quicker to cycle.

Repeater or single-shot. Repeaters feed from a detachable or internal magazine and are the default for PRS, NRL Hunter and hunting. Single-shot actions are shorter, stiffer and favored in benchrest and F-Class where every shot is loaded by hand.

Bolt face diameter. Has to match the case head. A .473" bolt face fits the .308 family (6mm BR, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win, most PRS rounds). A Magnum bolt face handles belted and unbelted magnums up to the WSM and .300 Win Mag. A Lapua bolt face (.588") covers .338 Lapua and .300 Norma. A PPC bolt face is for 6 PPC and 6mm BR in benchrest builds.

Footprint compatibility. Most actions on this page use the Remington 700 footprint, so they drop into R700-pattern stocks, chassis, triggers and bottom metal. Some lines (Kelbly Panda, certain Borden configurations) use proprietary footprints that need a dedicated stock or inlet work. Confirm footprint before ordering stock, chassis or trigger.

Brands We Carry

BAT Machine. Built in Rathdrum, Idaho. BAT has held more benchrest records than any other custom action maker. The lineup on this page includes the EX, EXS, Model M, CT, TR, Vampire, and Neuvo series, in stainless and chrome moly with black nitride or polished finishes. The BAT Neuvo line is a joint development between BAT Machine and Bullet Central, so the full range is available here.

Defiance Machine. ATF Class 7 manufacturer based in Columbia Falls, Montana. The Ruckus, Deviant, anTi X and Tenacity lines all run a one-piece 4340 chrome moly bolt with a headspace tolerance of plus or minus .001". Ruckus and anTi X have become PRS favorites thanks to their mix of match-grade precision and field durability. R700 footprint across the lineup.

Impact Precision. The 737R dominates the PRS leaderboards. Short action with a .700" bolt, integral 20 MOA rail, integral recoil lug and a Mini M16 extractor. AW cut feeds both AICS single-stack and AW double-stack magazines up to 2.960" OAL. Available in .308, Magnum, .223 and ARC bolt faces. The 787R is the long-action sibling with a .750" bolt for Lapua and Magnum.

Kelbly. Forty-plus years of custom action work out of North Lawrence, Ohio. The Atlas Tactical is a 33 oz steel action with black nitride finish, pinned 20 MOA rail, TG mechanical ejector and AICS single-stack feed. The aluminum Panda is the dominant benchrest platform, designed by Ralph Stolle for Light Varmint, Sporter and Heavy Varmint classes.

Borden Accuracy. Hardened 416 stainless with EDM-cut, honed bolt raceways. The Alpine XP and Timberline are purpose-built hunting actions that fit Remington 700 short-action inlets. The Black Knight XD is the long-range competition sibling in a full black nitride finish with a bottom recoil lug.

American Rifle Company. The Coup De Grâce is a lightweight R700-footprint action with dual cocking cams, toroidal bolt-lug bearing surfaces and a bolt that disassembles in the field with no tools. The Lightweight short action weighs 766 grams (about 27 oz), which is airgun-light for a centerfire action.

Actions by Discipline

PRS and NRL. Short-action repeaters with AICS magazine feed and a .473" bolt face dominate. The Impact 737R, Defiance Ruckus and Defiance anTi X are the most common picks. R700 footprint is non-negotiable for chassis swaps.

Benchrest. Single-shot short actions with the shortest possible lock time. BAT Machine EX and EXS actions have set more benchrest records than any competitor. Kelbly Panda is the other dominant platform. Pull weight, action stiffness and trigger hanger precision matter more than feed features here.

F-Class and ELR. Long-action repeaters for magnum cases. BAT Neuvo LR, BAT CT in .338 Lapua, Defiance Deviant long action and Borden Timberline cover this space. Bolt face (.534" Magnum or .588" Lapua) and rail MOA (20 to 60) become the deciding specs.

Hunting. Lightweight, field-durable, R700 footprint. The ARC Coup De Grâce Lightweight, the Borden Alpine XP and Defiance anTi X in hunting configuration keep weight down without giving up R700 compatibility.

Why Buy From Bullet Central

We build custom rifles in Fargo, North Dakota, so every action on this page is one we have chambered, threaded and shipped ourselves. The BAT Neuvo series is a BAT Machine and Bullet Central joint-development line, so that range is complete here. We stock matching precision rifle triggers, rifle barrel blanks, chassis and stocks, rifle bottom metal so the rest of the build ships from the same warehouse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an FFL to buy a bolt action receiver?

Yes. A receiver is a serialized firearm under federal law and must ship to a licensed FFL dealer. At checkout, select or add your FFL and we ship directly to them. Every other part of the rifle (barrel, stock, trigger, bottom metal) ships to your door.

What does "Remington 700 footprint" mean?

The action's external dimensions match the original Remington 700, so it drops into any R700-pattern stock, chassis, trigger or bottom metal. Most actions on this page use the R700 footprint. A small number (Kelbly Panda, some Borden configurations) use proprietary footprints that need a dedicated inlet.

How do I know which bolt face I need?

Bolt face diameter is set by the case head of your cartridge. The .473" standard bolt face fits 6mm BR, 6 Dasher, 6 GT, 6mm and 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 Rem and .308 Win. Magnum bolt faces handle .300 WSM, 6.5 PRC, 7 PRC and .300 Win Mag. Lapua bolt faces (.588") cover .338 Lapua and .300 Norma. PPC bolt faces are for benchrest cartridges. Use the bolt face filter on this page to narrow the grid.

Is a Bullet Central Neuvo action different from a BAT Neuvo action?

Same action. The Neuvo line was co-developed by BAT Machine and Bullet Central, so the catalog of configurations is carried in full here. There is no separate BC version.

Can I order a right-bolt, left-port or dual-port action?

Yes, on most BAT and Defiance models. Port and bolt handle orientation are configuration options on the product pages. If the configuration you want is not listed in stock, contact us and we can order it from the manufacturer.

How long does a custom action take to ship?

In-stock actions ship the next business day from Fargo to your FFL. Built-to-order configurations from BAT, Defiance and Kelbly currently run 8 to 20 weeks from the manufacturer depending on the line. We publish the live estimate on each product page.
