What Make Krieger Barrels Different?

Krieger Barrels builds in the Wisconsin cut-rifling tradition associated with Boots Obermeyer: single-point cut rifling, with a hook cutter taking tiny cuts through the bore over many passes rather than swaging or hammer forging the rifling into the steel. Krieger says this process produces highly concentric bore-and-groove geometry, very uniform twist, and no rifling-induced stress that later has to be relieved.

Which Krieger Is Right for You?

The notes below are common starting points, not universal rules. Twist and contour should be matched to your specific bullet, load, and discipline rules. Contact us if you want a second opinion before ordering.

  • Benchrest and short-range group shooting: Heavy Varmint or Benchrest Short, twist matched to bullet weight. 4-groove is the dominant choice in cut-rifled benchrest barrels.
  • PRS and NRL: Heavy Palma or Heavy Varmint, finish-chambered to 24 to 27 inches. Krieger has been a consistent name on PrecisionRifleBlog's annual "What the Pros Use" rankings.
  • F-Class Open and F-T/R: Standard or Heavy Palma in 30 inches, 4-groove, twist matched to your projectile. Common examples are 1:8.5 to 1:9 for heavy 7mm Open loads, and 1:10 to 1:11 for .308 F-T/R.
  • Palma prone: Standard or Heavy Palma in .308, 30 inches, 4-groove. A 1:13 twist is the common Palma choice for 155-class bullets.
  • Service rifle: Krieger lists service-rifle barrels separately under their AR-15, M1A/M14, M1 Garand, and M1903 product lines, with profiles built to NRA service rifle and DCM rules.
  • Hunting and sporter builds: K#2 Standard Sporter or K#4 Heavy Sporter in the caliber and twist that matches your load. Krieger catalogs .20 through 4 Bore and supports custom contour work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 4-groove and 6-groove Krieger barrels?

4-groove is Krieger's standard. 6-groove is offered on select calibers. Krieger has stated there is no demonstrable accuracy advantage between the two when the land-to-groove surface area ratio is held constant. Most cut-rifled match shooters run 4-groove. Pick 4-groove unless you have a specific reason to go 6.

Chrome-moly or stainless?

Krieger holds both steels to the same accuracy and barrel-life standard, with the difference coming down to maintenance. Stainless (416) resists corrosion. Chrome-moly (4140) can take a little longer to break in and tends to copper foul slightly more readily. Most Krieger blanks we stock are stainless, with select chrome-moly listings.

How do I break in a Krieger?

Krieger recommends a fire-one-shot-and-clean cycle for the first several rounds, watching patches for reduced fouling rather than chasing a fixed round count. Because the bore is lapped in the direction of bullet travel, a Krieger fouls less than a barrel with interior tool marks. Do not over-clean.

Does Bullet Central sell Krieger prefits?

Krieger produces prefit barrels for the Savage pattern and finish-chambered drop-ins for the AR-15 and Ruger Precision Rifle. Bullet Central stocks Krieger primarily as cut-rifled blanks for chambering. If you need a specific Krieger prefit, contact us.

How does Krieger compare to Bartlein?

Both are cut-rifled, both are Wisconsin shops, and both are well represented at the top of major precision rifle disciplines. Krieger has consistently ranked in PrecisionRifleBlog's "What the Pros Use" surveys. The choice usually comes down to availability and the specific twist or groove count you want.

What is the lead time on a Krieger from Bullet Central?

Anything shown as in stock typically ships same day when ordered by 1 PM CT, subject to current demand and shipping method. Orders placed direct with Krieger can run several months. If the configuration you need is not on our shelf, click Notify Me on the product page for a waitlist alert.
