Redding .304" Heat-Treated Steel Neck Sizing Bushing
Precision Sizing for Superior Reloading
The Redding .304" Heat-Treated Steel Neck Sizing Bushing is a testament to precision and reliability in the world of reloading. Crafted from heat-treated steel, these bushings offer shooters a consistent and efficient way to size cartridge necks for optimal ammunition performance.
Key Features:
- Hand-polished with a surface hardness of Rc 60-62
- Available in sizes from .185" to .368" in .001" increments
But how do you determine the right bushing size for your reloading needs? Let's explore two effective methods:
Method 1: Cartridge Neck Diameter Measurement
1. Measure the neck diameter of several loaded or dummy cartridges with an accurate micrometer.
2. Identify the cartridge with the smallest average measurement.
3. Subtract 0.001" from the diameter of this cartridge, allowing for a slight amount of spring back. This determines the proper bushing size for a proper press fit.
Method 2: Neck Wall Thickness and Bullet Diameter Calculation
1. Measure the neck wall thickness of the cartridge cases with a ball-type or tubing micrometer.
2. Double this measurement and add the bullet diameter to calculate the neck diameter of a loaded cartridge.
3. Subtract 0.001" from this figure to determine the suitable bushing size.
Please note that the second method may be less desirable due to the cost and difficulty of reading a ball micrometer accurately.
It's important to mention that these methods assume that the cases being sized have a fairly uniform neck wall thickness or have been neck turned. If the neck wall thickness varies more than 0.002", consider using a bushing slightly smaller than calculated and then use a size button in the die to achieve the final inside neck diameter.
