A 1:8 twist is the most common choice and stabilizes the majority of 140 to 150 grain match bullets. Faster twists, like 1:7.5, can provide additional stability margin for longer, heavier projectiles.
5R rifling uses five lands with angled sides rather than square edges. The odd number of lands avoids direct opposition across the bore, which helps reduce bullet deformation and may contribute to easier cleaning.
A blank is unchambered and unthreaded, and requires a gunsmith to finish. A prefit is pre-chambered and threaded for a specific action and installs with proper tools and gauges. Prefits reduce time and cost. Blanks allow full customization.
Barrel life depends heavily on cartridge and usage. As a general guideline, 6mm high-performance cartridges run roughly 1,800 to 2,500 rounds, and 6.5 Creedmoor stretches to roughly 2,500 to 4,000. Higher velocity and pressure accelerate throat erosion.
