What makes Berger Bullets different?
Berger started in 1955 when Walt Berger decided the match bullets he could buy weren't good enough and built his own. It's been a match-grade-only operation ever since. Every Berger is built on Berger's own J4 Precision Bullet Jackets, held to 0.0003" wall concentricity, the same jacket most custom benchrest makers use to build their own bullets. Berger manufactures in Mesa, Arizona. The Long Range Hybrid Target line uses Meplat Reduction Technology (MRT) and Doppler-radar-verified BCs with under 1% variation, which is why the 109gr 6mm and 140gr 6.5mm dominate top-tier PRS.
Product Lines at a Glance
Hybrid Target / Long Range Hybrid Target (LRHT). PRS and F-Class workhorses. The hybrid ogive (tangent at the bearing surface, secant forward) keeps BC high without the seating-depth sensitivity of a full secant. Hybrid Target covers 6mm 105gr, 6.5mm 140gr, .30 cal 215gr, and more. LRHT pushes BC higher with MRT meplat shaping and Doppler-verified numbers, in .22 (85.5gr), 6mm (109gr), and 6.5mm (144gr).
VLD Target. Full secant ogive for the highest BC. Picky on seating depth. Common in 6mm 115gr and heavier .30 cal weights for long-range target work.
Target / FB Target. Short-range and benchrest, including the 6mm 68gr FB Target for 6PPC and 6BR.
Classic Hunter. SAAMI-compliant hunting bullet that fits factory rifles and magazines. Hybrid ogive, J4 hunting jacket. Best pick for production 6.5 Creedmoor, .270, .308, or .30-06.
Elite Hunter / EOL Elite Hunter. Not SAAMI-limited, with longer noses and higher BCs. Best in custom or long-throat factory rifles.
VLD Hunting. Full secant. Same terminal behavior as Elite Hunter (per Berger's engineers), more seating-depth sensitive. The original Berger hunter, still widely run.
Varmint. FB Varmint .17 Cal 25gr for small game and predator calling.
Berger Ammunition (Loaded). Loaded match and hunting ammo in 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 6.5 PRC, Elite Hunter and LRHT loadings, available from the Match Centerfire Ammo category.

Which Berger Bullet Is Right for You?
- PRS/NRL 6mm: 109gr LRHT (highest BC) or 105gr Hybrid Target (slightly easier to tune). 1:7.5" or 1:8" twist.
- PRS/F-Class 6.5 Creedmoor: 140gr Hybrid Target is the default. 144gr LRHT is the higher-BC option. 1:8" twist.
- F-TR .308: Heavy Hybrid Target or LRHT in the 200-215 gr range. 1:10" or faster.
- Benchrest/short-range: 6mm 68gr FB Target for 6PPC/6BR; VLD Target 6mm 115gr for longer-throat barrels.
- Hunter, factory rifle: Classic Hunter in your caliber.
- Hunter, custom or long-throat factory: Elite Hunter or EOL Elite Hunter.
- Not reloading: Berger loaded Ammunition in 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, or 6.5 PRC.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hybrid Target vs VLD Target?
Hybrid blends a tangent curve at the bearing surface with a secant forward, holding BC close to a full secant while cutting jump sensitivity. VLD is full secant for the highest possible BC, but it needs careful seating-depth tuning. Hybrid is easier to load; VLD has a higher ceiling if you're willing to tune.
What twist rate do I need?
Use Berger's twist rate calculator and target a stability factor (Sg) of 1.5+. Rough guide: 6mm 105-109gr Hybrid/LRHT — 1:7.5" or 1:8"; 6.5mm 140-144gr — 1:8"; .308 175-178gr — 1:10" or 1:11"; heavy .308 (200gr+) — 1:10" or faster.
How do I find seating depth for a Berger Hybrid?
Measure by CBTO (Cartridge Base To Ogive), not COAL. Start .015" off the lands and step back in .015" increments. The sweet spot for a Hybrid Target or Elite Hunter is usually .015" to .060" off.
Are Berger bullets good for hunting?
Yes, on the right shot. Berger hunting bullets (VLD Hunting, Classic Hunter, Elite Hunter) penetrate 2-3 inches before expanding violently into the vitals, creating massive hydrostatic shock on deer-sized game. Classic Hunter is the SAAMI-compliant pick for factory rifles. Elite Hunter has the highest BC but needs a long-throat chamber.
Can I shoot Berger bullets in a factory rifle?
Yes. Classic Hunter is built around SAAMI dimensions and feeds from factory mags. Hybrid Target usually works too, though heavier match bullets (215gr .30 cal Hybrid Target, EOL Elite Hunter) may need a custom chamber or long-throat factory rifle.
