One For All Seasons
I was sitting here minding my own business when this rifle walked into my office. Shedding its coat - dropping it on the floor - it revealed itself to be an all season utility rifle . . . Heck! Who in their right mind has one rifle for all seasons, or for everything?
Well, Dave Scovill, formerly of Wolfe Publishing Group, might have tested myriads of loads in/with countless rifles per year, but claimed to only pack one personal rifle per year. If he had a coyote stealing his imaginary chicken, deer to encourage to leave their meat in his freezer, moose to populate the inside of his hide - it was all the same rifle during that year. One of his reasons for doing that was to become as familiar as possible with that particular long gun.
Today there are folks who figure they can go small. The forums have their debates about how the militaristic .223 can kill big game with well placed shots. And as John Barsness was once quoted: “The three rules of successful hunting are 1. Shot placement. 2. Shot placement. 3. Shot placement!
There are the practical guys, kinda like Mr. S. Whatever comes to hand, is handy, or don’t bite back. Use that the most and you should get pretty darn good with it - whatever the game. No such thing as overkill. Just dead.
This morning’s visitor:
XLR Industries Folding Element 4.0 Magnesium
Kelbly Nanook LA
Proof Research Carbon Fiber Barrel
Nightforce NX8 4-32X50
Dead Air Suppressor
Bixn Andy TacSport Pro X trigger
MDT Mountain Bipod
300 PRC
300 PRC?!?!
Well, an elk tag was drawn by this rifle’s chauffeur/driver. There’s even a chance for a moose, and no one is taking any chances! Will it kill a gopher or a coyote? Probably. Should maybe try, once. I know it’ll wreck an elk’s day, for sure. Gophers, though . . .
While I could not get this rifle to step on the scale, it was mighty light. Perhaps his Dead Air can could be fronted by a Recoil X brake to make shooting more funner.
